Trying Something Different

I recently had a conversation with one of my cousins about trying new things and how we suppose some people resist new things (recipes in this case) due to a fear of failure. That conversation came back to haunt me as I tried two new roll out cookie recipes this weekend.

I am trying to get ahead with my baking because my grandma's 80th birthday is coming up and I volunteered to make the cake/cupcakes for the celebration. This will be probably the biggest project I've undertaken in quite a while. I also want to make a few things for Thanksgiving and won't have time closer to the actual holiday.

I had been meaning to try this recipe for a while but just hadn't gotten around to it. I finally decided to try it for one of my Thanksgiving projects and boy... it's a good thing I'm not afraid to fail. You see, the recipe is in weights instead of volume and I knew I had seen this blogger post her recipe somewhere with a conversion to cups. I found it on YouTube and rather than watch the video of her making the recipe, I just looked at the notes. I also had company on the way over and was trying to get dinner started (excuses!).

I made the dough and threw it in the fridge and forgot all about it. Until the next day when I realized there was supposed to be powdered sugar in the dough but the directions never said to add it. I looked at the directions again and sure enough, they never said to add the sugar. I decided to try to add the powdered sugar after the fact and I can tell you that these cookies sure taste delicious but they are not pretty. They spread terribly and are very bumpy compared to what I usually decorate. I expect if you make them correctly they will look as nice as they taste.

Since I am planning on bringing cookies to my grandma's for Thanksgiving and she appreciates new/different flavors, I thought I'd try a pumpkin spice type recipe also. I followed this recipe (without any hiccups) and they came out beautifully. They're pretty tasty too, although my husband prefers the taste of the honey cookies.

Can you guess what I'm making for my Thanksgiving project?
